
A customer sent me two boards with the same Bluetooth module on each, one with a chip antenna and one with a whip on the edge. The whip beat it by eleven decibels on the bench. In the metal cabinet, the chip antenna won. That was the day I stopped giving one answer.
The chip antenna is almost free
A chip antenna costs nothing extra and needs no connector or cable, just a cleared patch of board you were going to leave empty anyway. On a Bluetooth module that already ships with one, you pay zero and ship a smaller product. The catch is that keep-out zone: the antenna needs a behaving ground plane around it, and if you get that wrong you lose range you can’t recover.
The external antenna reaches farther
Move the radiator outside the enclosure, away from the battery and the steel, and a Bluetooth module suddenly talks to things it couldn’t before. We measured a fifteen decibel gain on some boards just by lifting the element off the PCB into the air. Fifteen decibels is about three times the distance. For a product that lives in a metal box, that gap is the whole project.
But the cable costs you forever
Every centimeter of coax is loss, every connector a failure point. A band-rated cable still eats one or two decibels, and the connector works loose after a few drops. The external antenna wins on range and loses on reliability and on the bill of materials, and that bill arrives on every single unit.
Where each one belongs
A tag with no room and a short link budget wants the chip antenna. A gateway bolted to a wall with power and space wants the external. The mistake I see most is the reverse: a tiny device carrying a stub it never needed, or a fixed install that cheaped out on the antenna and then needed a second gateway to cover the same floor.
The test that ends the argument
Don’t trust the datasheet range. Build both, drop them in the real enclosure, measure in the real space. We keep a one-meter holder and a fixed reference node; the number that matters is the gap between the two boards in the actual product, not the spec. On one design the chip antenna lost only two decibels versus the external once both were inside the housing, so we shipped the chip and dropped the connector on forty thousand units.
What I ask before choosing
How far must it go, inside its own case? Is there room and a clean ground plane, or is the board crammed? Can someone yank the external one off? Answer those and the choice makes itself. They aren’t better or worse. They’re just for different boxes.
